When I started working for my dad we were remodeling kitchens that had metal cabinets and wall hung sinks with one round light in the middle of the room. The typical floor covering was linoleum! Nicer kitchens may have had metal or plastic wall tile. We replaced them with "modern" kitchens with dark stained birch cabinets, pumpkin colored slate Formica counter tops, brick pattern sheet floors and light up grid ceilings. It reminds me of a picture that I have somewhere of me in a blue leisure suit. Everything is a product of its times. I've been around long enough to be able to tear out the types of kitchens and replace them with nice "modern" kitchens. I hope that these are more timeless than the ones we installed in the 70"s. I think that will be the case. There are so many material choices now! It can drive you a little crazy during the planning stages but results in projects that really reflect the tastes of the homeowner. I think light is really important. Natural light, general overall lighting, task lighting and accent lighting should combine to make a kitchen pleasant to be in and make working in it a easy. Good function never goes out of style! Here are some pictures of some of the kitchens that I have built over the past couple of years. |
